Line Of The Night

An email exchange I had a few days ago:

Them: I am writing to inform you that the rountable [sic] which was set to take place on 30 November 2021 has been POSTPONED. In hopes of hosting a discussion on digital economy and building time for greater participation, it is decided to postpone the session after the new year. We would be most pleased to have you on the panel at the newer date, most likely in mid-December 2021. If it would still be possible and convenient, we will be in touch as soon as the new date and other details have been confirmed.

Me: Noted, thank you. It’s unclear from your email whether this is being postponed to after the new year or to mid-December. Feel free to let me know either way, but please note I will likely not be available in mid to late December.

Them: My apologies for the confusion. It was meant to inform that the roundtable shall be postponed to next year however, we will try to host the roundtable before next year which is maybe mid-December.

Line Of The Night

Instructor in an R workshop: We often need to import data from other statistical software packages. Stata is widely-used across the social sciences. Different packages have different constituencies and market shares across disciplines and industries and over time. Economists use Stata a lot. Sociologists often use it too. Psychologists use SPSS so it’s entrenched there, and in the pharmaceutical industry SAS is kind of well-established there…well, I mean I shouldn’t troll other packages; they’re all very good. We’re using R now, here in the 21st century. If you want to go back to 1995 you can use SPSS, and if you want to go back to 1985 you can use Stata, and if you want to go back to 1955 you can use SAS.

Line Of The Night

One of my favourite scenes from Free Guy is this little exchange:

Millie: Put these [glasses] on!

Guy: I don’t have to do anything that I don’t want to do.

Millie: [sarcastically while cocking a gun and aiming it at Guy] True, the choice is totally yours.

Guy: Okay, okay, fine. [puts the glasses on and has his mind blown]

Line Of The Night

Glorious exchange with my mother tonight.

me: How much did you pay for the printing?

my mother: 19 pages, 3.80, so…38 cents per page.

me: WHAT?

my mother: No, what is it? Tell me!

me: [silence]

my mother: 4, no, 5 cents!

me: No! Who taught you math?

my mother: 2 cents.

me: [more silence]

my mother: 20 cents!

me: Yes.
